Grain Gravy – Two Part Wood Finish

Part:

Grain Gravy is a two part woodworking finish that I personally make and use on the majority of projects that leave my shop. It is simple to apply, highly forgiving, and designed to bring out the natural beauty of wood while providing durable protection.

This finish is built around a straightforward process that produces reliable results whether you are finishing furniture, shop projects, or small woodworking pieces.

Part 1 – The Foundation (16 ounce can)

Part 1 is made from a blend of urethane, finishing oil, and turpentine.

Apply three wipe on coats using a rag or a torn cotton t shirt. Each coat goes on thin and smooth, allowing the finish to build gradually while enhancing the grain of the wood.

The ingredients each serve an important purpose.

Urethane forms a tough, durable clear topcoat that creates a scratch resistant and water resistant barrier.
Finishing oil helps disperse the finish evenly and allows it to penetrate the wood fibers.
Turpentine acts as a thinning agent that improves flow and helps the finish wipe on easily.

Part 2 – The Final Coat (16 ounce jar)

Part 2 is the final step and is made from beeswax, finishing oil, and turpentine.

Wipe on one coat using a rag or torn t shirt. After about 10 to 15 minutes, wipe off the excess. This final layer enriches the surface and leaves behind a soft, satin sheen.

The beeswax provides a natural, non toxic protective layer that helps seal the wood against moisture while nourishing the timber and enhancing the feel of the finished surface.

Why I Use Grain Gravy

Grain Gravy is designed to be a forgiving finish that is easy to apply and difficult to mess up. Thin wipe on coats reduce streaks, runs, and blotching while producing a smooth and durable finish that highlights the character of the wood.

It is the same finish system I rely on in my own shop, and it has become a trusted part of my woodworking process.
